Engineering Plastics

BASF offers Ultramid range of Engineering Plastics for the manufacture of robust and reliable plastic parts for use in automobiles. Suitable for numerous applications that call for high mechanical strength, stiffness and thermal resistance, Ultramid is a polyamide compounds on the basis of PA 6 and PA 66, and a partially aromatic polyamide. Affording good impact resistance even at low temperatures, advantageous sliding friction properties and problem-free processing, Ultramid engineering plastic finds application in automotive applications like oil pans, battery cell frames, accelerator pedal, air intake manifolds, airbag housings, engine cover, etc. Among the grades available under Ultramid, Ultramid B3ZG7 OSI has been designed and developed for oil pans, which have to withstand vibration, long-term heat aging in oil and be impact resistant to objects kicked up from the road. An "Optimised for Stone Impact" grade, Ultramid B3ZG7 OSI equals and exceeds the performance of cast aluminium in oil pans. A polyamide 6 (nylon 6), it is 35% glass reinforced and impact modified resin. It has survived a battery of experimental data showing OSI initial cracking at 60 mph, whereas aluminium pans crack at an impact of around 50 mph under the BASF proprietary 'stone impact' simulation testing.
