Swaraj Tractors invests Rs 200 cr in cutting-edge 40-50 HP range

Swaraj Tractors, a division of Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M), has committed an investment of Rs 200 crore to develop an entirely new line of tractors in the 40-50 HP category, which constitutes nearly 50% of the total sales in the domestic tractor industry.

Harish Chavan, the Chief Executive Officer of Swaraj Division at M&M, emphasised the significance of this new tractor range in preparing their brand for the future demands of agricultural mechanisation. Speaking during the launch event, Chavan mentioned the substantial Rs 200 crore investment dedicated to creating this innovative range.

The company, which unveiled these tractors recently, has designed them to effortlessly handle modern and heavy agricultural implements. These tractors are engineered to deliver remarkable power and heightened productivity, catering to both existing and emerging applications. Eventually, they will replace the current tractors in this category and serve as a catalyst for modernising other tractor ranges within the company.

Hemant Sikka, President of the Farm Equipment Sector at M&M, stated, "Through this new tractor range, we are introducing the latest features and technologies to elevate mechanisation in Indian agriculture, empowering farmers to achieve higher yields with reduced effort."

These new tractors are now available at Swaraj dealerships across India, with prices starting at Rs 6.9 lakh for the base model with 42 HP (31.3 kW) and going up to Rs 9.95 lakh for the top-end model with 50 HP (37.2 kW).

Swaraj Tractors currently exports to markets in South Asia and Africa, and the new range will also be exported to these existing markets. To expand its reach into new geographies, M&M recently introduced a range of small-sized tractors based on the OJA platform.

Chavan highlighted the rapid growth in the Indian tractor industry, particularly in the 40-50 hp category, which has witnessed an impressive 3-year CAGR of 14.3%. In comparison, the overall tractor industry has maintained a CAGR of only 10.1% during the same period.

To accommodate this growth, Swaraj is nearing completion of a new manufacturing plant in Mohali, set to become operational in the fourth quarter of the current fiscal year. However, specific production capacity figures were not disclosed. Currently, the tractor manufacturer operates two manufacturing facilities, one R&D centre, and a foundry in Mohali, Punjab.

Swaraj Tractors manufactures a diverse range of tractors spanning from 15HP to 65HP. Chavan expressed optimism about maintaining growth momentum due to the new product range and their extensive dealer network. The only variable they anticipate affecting this growth is the pattern of rainfall. Despite some uncertainty, there are positive indications, including improved sowing patterns and favourable forecasts for September.

Regarding the mechanisation of agriculture in India, Chavan noted that there is substantial untapped potential to enhance productivity through mechanisation. While Indian agriculture has seen widespread tractor use, it is not fully mechanised yet. Looking ahead, digital technologies like telematics for tractor health monitoring and geofencing will proliferate. Features such as multiple PTO speeds and higher transmission speeds will also become more commonplace across the range of tractors offered by the company.

In response to questions about electrification in the tractor industry, Chavan suggested that it would take some time to gain popularity in India. He highlighted challenges related to battery size and weight, as tractors have unique requirements for torque and power, especially considering the demanding conditions of Indian agriculture. Consequently, the company believes that electric tractors are not yet ready for widespread adoption in such intense and vital agricultural applications.
