India aims to lead global semiconductor industry amidst supply chain challenges

Panelists at the ongoing Bengaluru Tech Summit 2023 emphasised that India has the potential to emerge as a leader in the semiconductor industry by cultivating a robust talent pool and actively addressing global supply chain challenges. Suraj Rengorajan, Chief Technology Officer at Applied Materials, highlighted India's capability to alleviate the global semiconductor talent shortage and stressed the need for a collaborative effort to position India as a key player in the global semiconductor supply chain.

Rengorajan also pointed out that India has an opportunity to contribute sustainable solutions to propel the semiconductor industry forward. He emphasised the importance of ensuring sufficient power and water resources for sustainability and underscored the potential for designing and building sustainable equipment within India.

Hitesh Garg, Country Manager at NXP Semiconductors, acknowledged the significant strides made by large companies in India in terms of semiconductor design and innovation. However, he identified the gap in making India a manufacturing hub and highlighted collaboration with academia and startups as a key avenue for fostering innovation in semiconductor manufacturing.

Several global semiconductor companies are already making substantial investments in India. For instance, Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) recently inaugurated its largest global design center in Bengaluru, part of a $400 million investment aimed at expanding research, development, and engineering operations in India. The facility, spanning 500,000 sq. ft., is set to accommodate around 3,000 engineers working on cutting-edge semiconductor technology, including 3D stacking, artificial intelligence (AI), and machine learning (ML).

India's semiconductor market is projected to reach $64 billion by 2026, nearly three times its size in 2019. The growth will be driven by both domestic and export markets, with significant demand expected from sectors such as consumer electronics, telecom, IT hardware, and industrial applications. Notable investments, such as Micron Technology's semiconductor testing and packaging plant in Gujarat and Applied Materials' $400 million investment in a new engineering centre in India, further underscore the country's increasing importance in the global semiconductor landscape.
