Centre plans Master App for real-time EV charging slot availability

The Indian government is planning to develop a comprehensive mobile application that will provide real-time information on the availability of electric vehicle (EV) charging slots nearby. The purpose of this app is to alleviate range anxiety and promote the adoption of EVs. A stakeholder meeting was organized by Niti Aayog on June 7, where representatives from companies operating public EV chargers discussed the app and potential plans for a beta version in the coming weeks.

The proposed app will enable users to easily locate the nearest charging station, reserve a charging slot in advance, and make payments. The Asian Development Bank is funding this project, and the app will be owned and operated by the Indian government.

One of the main challenges faced in the current scenario is that charging stations are operated by different companies, each with its own dedicated app. This lack of interoperability requires users to download multiple apps. Kartikey Hariyani, founder and CEO of Charge Zone, a charging station operator, emphasized the importance of aggregation and the need for thorough testing, validation, and software integration for the success of such an app.

The concept of a unified app for EV charging was initially proposed by the state-run Convergence Energy Services Ltd (CESL), but it faced obstacles in sourcing and consolidating data, leading to its delay. CESL was unavailable for comment regarding these issues.

During the Niti Aayog meeting, industry participants expressed concerns about user privacy and the sharing of proprietary data with third parties. Companies also hesitated because the proposed app would render their existing apps obsolete, potentially diminishing their competitive advantage.

Niti Aayog acknowledged these concerns and encouraged participants to provide suggestions and collaborate closely with each other to find a viable solution in the coming weeks. An industry representative who attended the meeting mentioned that there was a suggestion to develop the app by the next month, with the intention of unveiling it at a G20 event to showcase India's progress in this domain.

According to data from the Bureau of Energy Efficiency, as of May 5, there were 7,013 operational public charging stations across India. The second phase of the FAME India scheme has allocated Rs 1,000 crore towards the development of charging infrastructure.

The government has approved the establishment of 2,877 EV charging stations in 68 cities across 25 states and Union territories. Additionally, 1,576 charging stations along nine expressways and 16 highways have been sanctioned under the second phase of FAME. Recently, Rs 800 crore was allocated to oil marketing companies to install 22,000 fast chargers at their fuel stations.
