Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh

The Lucknow node of UP Defence Corridor will start manufacturing the state-of-the-art BrahMos missiles after Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath gave a go-ahead to the project.

The move will likely generate employment for 10,000 skilled, semi-skilled non-skilled workers. While around 500 engineers and technicians would work in Lucknow, the rest would be at ancillary units.

Rs 3 billion would be invested, and the construction work would begin within three months of getting the land. The project might produce 300 missiles by the third year and GST worth Rs 3.6 billion each year.

The steps for the development started in January 2018, when PM Narendra Modi announced the conception of a defence corridor in UP. The state government then set up defence corridors at Lucknow, Kanpur, Chitrakoot, Jhansi, Agra and Aligarh.

The DRDO, a majority shareholder of BrahMos Aerospace, which is a joint venture of DRDO, the Indian government and NPOM (Russia), wanted a production facility for BrahMos-NG in the UP Defence Corridor. The project required a location of strategic depth and good connectivity to air, rail and road.

Accordingly, Sudhir Kumar Mishra, Director General, BrahMos Aerospace, wrote to Awanish Awasthi, UPEIDA CEO and Additional Chief Secretary (Home), for a 200-acre land for the project in the Defence Corridor.

BrahMos Supersonic Cruise Missile is a unique, precise, state-of-the-art cruise missile in the world. It is designed and produced by BrahMos Aerospace and is based on the technology of Russia's P-800 Oniks cruise missile. The Indian Army, Navy and Air Force have this weapon system.
