Incremental Shaft Encoders

Incremental Shaft Encoders

The encoders use (normally infra red) emitter – detector pair to create a light source, which passes through a disc made of transparent and opaque windows on its periphery. The rotation of the disk prepares a stream of pulses at the detector end which is pulse shaped to give digital output in various forms. One light stream comprises of 1 channel. More channels can be added around the same disk to give more outputs. These are basically used as components to give feedback in digital form. The encoders are normally divided into- Absolute Encoders: An encoder, which shows absolute (encoded) position of the load & Incremental encoders: which give proportional output on increment of position of the load. The incremental encoders have gained wide acceptance and are increasingly used because of wide usage in different applications, increased usage of digital electronics, ease in usage, economic pricing, small size, etc. Encoders give information of speed, direction, position also rate of change of speed / position which is vital in today’s industrial operations.
