How Schmalz AI vision and FMG grippers optimise pick-and-place automation

The Indian manufacturing sector is undergoing a massive operational shift. As industries push toward global quality standards, the demand for high-mix, low-volume production is soaring. Traditional fixed automation setups struggle to keep pace with this need for rapid flexibility. To bridge this gap, modern production lines require intelligent, adaptable solutions that can "see," "think," and "act" with precision.

By combining the Schmalz ivOS AI Vision system with the highly adaptive Matrix Area Gripper FMG, smart automation is now a readily deployable reality for factories tackling complex pick-and-place challenges. Traditional machine vision systems rely heavily on rigid, rule-based programming. If a part shifts slightly out of alignment, or if multiple varied components are stacked together, the system often fails. Schmalz eliminates this bottleneck by infusing industrial image processing with state-of-the-art Deep Learning algorithms.

Equipped with a high-definition 3D camera and the AI-supported ivOS software, the Schmalz vision system acts as the cognitive brain of the assembly line. Instead of requiring tedious manual teaching for every new part geometry, the AI autonomously segments workpieces, accurately calculates the optimal gripping points, and devises collision-free travel paths. For sectors such as sheet metal fabrication, automotive components, and electronics, this means zero-downtime changeovers. The system continuously learns from its environment, allowing it to easily handle unsorted, varying, or completely unknown workpieces straight out of a bin or off a conveyor.

While the AI vision system provides the sight and strategy, the Schmalz Matrix Area Gripper FMG delivers the flawless mechanical execution. Handling flat cut parts—especially thin sheet metal pieces freshly extracted from laser cutting or nesting machines—presents unique challenges. These parts are prone to micro-warping, oil-film adhesion, and highly intricate geometric variances.

The FMG gripper module is engineered specifically to tackle these hurdles:
  • Individually controlled suction points: Utilising advanced IO-Link communication, the FMG activates only the specific vacuum cups required to match the exact profile of the cut part. This targeted suction eliminates energy waste and prevents vacuum loss from uncovered cups.
  • Integrated mechanical lift: Each FMG gripper module features an integrated mechanical lift system with individual suction point activation via IO-Link. When dealing with nested or tightly packed flat parts, this lifting action safely separates the targeted piece from surrounding skeletons or stacks without shifting adjacent materials.
  • High-temperature, no-mar materials: Constructed with premium HT1 material, the suction cups handle raw, oiled, or hot cut surfaces without leaving visible marks, safeguarding product aesthetic and structural integrity.
  • Perfect synergy for high-mix, low-volume production: When integrated, the AI vision system and the FMG gripper transform standard pick-and-place applications into fully autonomous, dynamic processes. The AI detects the layout of randomly arranged flat cut parts on a nesting table, identifies individual geometries, and communicates the precise physical coordinate data to the robot control unit. Simultaneously, the FMG gripper dynamically configures its active-matrix array to lift and place the part with flawless consistency.

This combination drastically compresses engineering times, cuts down on expensive programming hours, and dramatically reduces reliance on manual material handling. For an expanding industrial landscape focused on maximising throughput and optimizing shop-floor space, this synergy solves genuine operational bottlenecks.
