Alstom, a global leader in smart and sustainable mobility, has been awarded a € 135 million contract by Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) to design, manufacture, supply, test and commission 96 Metropolis driverless metro cars for Chennai Metro Phase II. Covering approximately 119 km, the project includes 76 km of elevated tracks and 43 km underground across three corridors and interchanges.

As part of the agreement, Alstom will supply 32 metro trainsets, each in a three-car configuration, and provide comprehensive maintenance for 15 years following the warranty period. This includes cleaning, obsolescence management and maintenance of depot machinery. The Metropolis trains will be designed at Alstom’s engineering centre in Bengaluru and manufactured at its Sri City facility in Andhra Pradesh, supporting the ‘Make in India’ and ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ initiatives.

With unique aesthetics, superior safety standards, and a focus on sustainability, each Metropolis trainset will carry up to 900 passengers. Trains will feature multi-mode operation and evacuation capabilities between trains and tracks to ensure optimal safety.

Commenting on the announcement, Olivier Loison, Managing Director - Alstom India, said, “Our India journey began with Chennai Metro Phase I in 2010, marking our first rolling stock contract in the country. This new order strengthens our partnership with CMRL in reshaping Chennai’s urban mobility. We’re honoured to deliver world-class, Made-in-India metro trains offering a safe, sustainable, and reliable commuting experience.”

Alstom is already producing 108 driverless Metropolis cars for Phase II, connecting Poonamallee Bypass to Light House across 30 stations, including 18 elevated and 12 underground. Since its first contract with CMRL in 2010, Alstom has delivered 208 metro cars for Chennai Phase I. In collaboration with Larsen & Toubro, it has also executed track work across viaducts, tunnels, depots, and corridors covering around 86 km.

In line with India’s infrastructure goals, Alstom continues to introduce cutting-edge technologies, including rolling stock, rail equipment, signalling, and services. Alstom metro trains are operational in Delhi, Chennai, Lucknow, Kochi, Mumbai, and under delivery in Agra-Kanpur and Indore-Bhopal. Today, every third metro in India is made by Alstom.

With over 60 years of experience, Alstom’s Metropolis trains serve cities worldwide. They offer flexible configurations from 2 to 9 cars, adaptable to different gauges, voltages, and custom interiors, with manual or driverless operation. Metropolis models ensure low noise, high recyclability, and energy efficiency for minimal environmental impact. Over 35,000 metro cars have been ordered or are operational across 70 cities in 40 countries.

As a global leader in rail services, Alstom supports clients across the entire asset lifecycle. Its FlexCare Perform service portfolio ranges from technical assistance to fully outsourced maintenance.
