Corning chooses Telangana for revolutionary gorilla glass facility

Telangana has received a significant boost as Corning Inc, a Fortune 500 materials science company headquartered in New York, has selected the state as the location for their groundbreaking gorilla glass manufacturing facility. This marks a pioneering investment in India and underlines Telangana's growing prominence in the global smartphone industry. The envisioned facility will specialize in producing cover glass for leading smartphone manufacturers.

With a rich legacy spanning over 172 years, Corning Inc. is renowned for its expertise in glass science, ceramics science, and optical physics. The company stands as the trailblazer behind innovations like gorilla glass, a highly durable glass widely integrated into portable devices such as mobile phones, tablets, and laptops.

Corning's proposed investment of Rs 934 crore, in collaboration with their partners, signifies a strategically pivotal move that will catalyze the smartphone manufacturing ecosystem within Telangana and across India. This venture is expected to create employment opportunities for more than 800 individuals.

Minister for IT and Industries, K T Rama Rao, recently convened a meeting with Corning Inc.'s senior vice-president, John Bayne, global operations executive Ravi Kumar, and director of Government Affairs, Sarah Cartmell, in New York. During this meeting, Rama Rao expressed, "Telangana has rapidly emerged as a hub for electronics manufacturing, driven by the state's transformative initiatives over the past nine years. Hyderabad, in particular, has become a preferred destination for numerous electronics manufacturing giants. Earlier this year, Foxconn made a substantial investment in the state, and now Corning's commitment to Telangana promises to usher in a new era of smartphone manufacturing, not only in the state but also across India."

The meeting also saw the presence of Principal Secretary for Industries & IT, Jayesh Ranjan, Special Secretary for Investment Promotion & NRI Affairs, Vishnu Vardhan Reddy, and director (Electronics), Sujai Karampuri, further emphasizing the significance of this momentous investment in Telangana's burgeoning electronics landscape.
