Thyssenkrupp nucera expands to Mumbai, driving green hydrogen growth in India

Thyssenkrupp nucera has taken a significant step forward in its expansion strategy by establishing a new office in Mumbai, India, marking its eighth international location. This move emphasises the company's commitment to the growth and development of the green hydrogen sector. Positioned in Vikhroli, northeast Mumbai, the office benefits from its strategic location near one of Asia's major ports, enhancing accessibility and facilitating global operations.

With a dedicated sales and engineering competence centre, the Mumbai hub is poised to bolster thyssenkrupp nucera's presence in India and support its worldwide initiatives in engineering and project execution, particularly in the Middle East, Asia, and Australia. Starting with approximately 30 employees, the Mumbai office is anticipated to experience rapid growth, reaching over 80 employees within the next three years.

Vaidyanathan Nagarajan, Managing Director of thyssenkrupp nucera India Private Limited, emphasised the company's longstanding history in India and its strong customer relationships spanning over four decades. He highlighted Mumbai's strategic significance as India's economic centre and the logical choice for expanding their operations.

Dr Arno Pfannschmidt, CFO of thyssenkrupp nucera AG & Co KGaA, underscored the advantages of India as an expansion location, citing the availability of a skilled workforce across the country. He emphasised the pivotal role of India in thyssenkrupp nucera's growth ambitions in Asia, considering India's position as a hub for the South Asian market, favorable conditions for renewable power generation, and the escalating demand for cost-effective electrolysis technology.

India's electrolysis market is recognised as a key future market, particularly in the production of green hydrogen through alkaline water electrolysis. Thyssenkrupp nucera, already a dominant player in the Indian chlor-alkali sector with a market share exceeding 70%, aims to consolidate its position further with the support of the new Mumbai office. The positive trajectory of India's economy, coupled with its potential to produce green hydrogen on an industrial scale, makes it an integral part of thyssenkrupp nucera's growth strategy.

India, being the world's third-largest emitter of CO?, is poised for a significant surge in green hydrogen demand in the coming years. The Indian government has set ambitious targets, aiming to expand domestic production capacities to 5 million metric tons of green hydrogen annually by 2030, corresponding to an electrolysis capacity of about 50 gigawatts. This initiative aligns with India's goal to fulfil its domestic demand and at least 10% of the global demand, with Europe as a central target market. In the long term, India envisions achieving an annual capacity of over 10 million metric tons, reflecting its commitment to sustainable energy solutions.
