Tech professionals drive into India's Automotive Industry for High-Potential Careers

Amid a turbulent period in the technology industry, tech professionals in India are discovering a promising avenue for career advancement: the automotive sector. Recruitment agencies have witnessed a notable surge in demand for technology experts coming from auto companies seeking specialised talent.

Human resources experts attribute this shift to the technological transformation happening within the automotive industry, as vehicles evolve into "gadgets on wheels." Colleen D'Souza, the Head of HR at Mercedes-Benz India, emphasised the need for potential recruits to possess skills in digital tools, in-car technology, and advanced driver-assistance systems.

As connected, electric, and autonomous technologies gain prominence, auto companies are increasingly adopting digitalisation in their product design and engineering processes, as noted by the job portal foundit. Presently, there are approximately 8,000 tech-related job openings in the auto industry.

Cities like Bengaluru and Chennai have seen annual tech job growth rates in the auto sector of 13% and 11%, respectively, while Mumbai and Delhi/NCR have experienced growth rates of 10% and 8% annually.

Sekhar Garisa, CEO of foundit, stated, "Projections indicate an anticipated 17% growth by the year's end, underscoring the industry's resilience and potential for continued expansion."

Experts highlight a fundamental shift in the automotive sector, moving from largely mechanical internal combustion engine vehicles to electrical products, particularly electric vehicles (EVs). Vidur Gupta, Director of Spectrum Talent Management, points out that most new products in this sector are electric, featuring motors and battery packs. These EVs are digital, incorporating drive-by-wire technology, autonomous driving capabilities, digital instrument clusters, onboard computing, and advanced infotainment systems. They are also wirelessly connected through mobile and satellite networks, requiring skills not traditionally found in the automotive sector but dependent on technology talent.

Currently, sought-after job profiles in major auto companies for tech professionals include software developer, data scientist, cybersecurity engineer, embedded systems engineer, and product manager. These profiles have been categorised based on the number of interviews conducted on the InCruiter platform.

In the realm of electric vehicles, skills in demand include multidisciplinary technology design, analytical skills, app development, data analysis, and more.

Professionals with expertise in niche fields enjoy substantial salary increases despite the volatile job market and economic challenges. For example, Spectrum Talent Management has observed salary hikes ranging from 40-60% for talent with relevant experience in their roles. This trend is expected to continue, with technology roles accounting for 20-25% of all positions sought by recruitment firms from automotive companies.

Additionally, foundit reports a 23% increase in the average salary raise for IT positions within the automotive industry over the last two years.
