Symbio unveils SymphonHy, Europe's largest fuel cell gigafactory

Symbio, a joint venture equally owned by Forvia, Michelin, and Stellantis, has officially opened SymphonHy, its inaugural gigafactory serving as a hub for technological and industrial excellence. Situated in Saint-Fons within the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, SymphonHy stands as the largest integrated fuel cell production facility in Europe, solidifying Symbio's position as a leader in both technology and industry. The site encompasses the company's headquarters, a production plant, an expansive innovation hub, and the Symbio Hydrogen Academy.

SymphonHy boasts cutting-edge technology with a high degree of automation and robotics, facilitating cost-effective large-scale industrial production. These advancements play a pivotal role in expediting the deployment of competitive, high-performance hydrogen-powered transportation, aligning with Europe's ambitions for a net-zero future.

Part of the HyMotive initiative, a strategic EUR1 billion project endorsed by the European Union and the French government under the IPCEI program, SymphonHy is set to generate 1,000 jobs over its operational lifespan. Supplied with fuel cells from Symbio, Stellantis will expand its hydrogen offerings, encompassing large vans, Ram pickups, and heavy-duty trucks for the North American market.

Key figures for SymphonHy include a current production capacity of 16,000 (expected to reach 50,000 by 2026), an existing surface area of 26,000 m2 (projected to grow to 40,000 m2 by 2026), and various dedicated spaces for innovation, cleanrooms, and a world-class innovation center housing over 450 engineers.

SymphonHy positions Symbio to support customers in realising affordable zero-emission hydrogen mobility without compromising performance. With over 30 years of experience and the backing of influential shareholders, Symbio offers a diverse portfolio of solutions for efficient zero-emission mobility across various vehicle types.

Stellantis, a co-shareholder in Symbio, reaffirms its commitment to hydrogen technology, extending its hydrogen solutions to include large vans with mid-power architecture, impressive range, and rapid recharge times. Plans for hydrogen technology in Ram brand pickups are also confirmed, with all vehicles equipped with fuel cells produced by Symbio.

SymphonHy's inauguration underscores Europe's industrial and technological leadership, with Symbio poised to scale up and contribute to the acceleration of zero-emission hydrogen mobility deployment. The gigafactory, operational in less than two years, signifies Symbio's ability to meet industrial commitments and support the transition to sustainable, high-performance, and affordable hydrogen electric mobility.
