Spanish firms eye high-speed rail and defence projects in India

The Spanish Ambassador, Jose Maria Ridao Dominguez, stated that Spanish transportation companies are keen on constructing high-speed railway networks in India. Spain, having the world's second-largest high-speed train network after China, is interested in exploring opportunities in India's private sector. Dominguez highlighted Talgo, a Spanish manufacturer of high-speed passenger trains, as one of the companies expressing interest in India's high-speed rail sector.

In addition to transportation, Spain is placing a significant focus on defense in its dealings with India. Dominguez mentioned that Spain's state-owned defense firm, Navantia, is in contention for a contract to build six submarines for India under Project 75 (I). Navantia has partnered with Larsen and Toubro for this project, which is valued at over €4.8 billion and is India's largest defence acquisition. The deal includes a full transfer of technology from Navantia, which plans to base the submarine's design on its S80 class of submarines currently undergoing sea trials.

Despite competition from Germany's Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems (TKMS), Dominguez expressed confidence in Spain's submarine propulsion technology, emphasizing its ecological superiority and commitment to the "Make In India" program. He stated that Spanish firms are open to further collaborations with the Indian Air Force and Navy, including potential partnerships in aircraft carrier technologies.

Furthermore, Airbus Spain recently delivered its first C-295 transport aircraft to the Indian military as part of a 2021 deal for 56 such aircraft, aimed at replacing India's aging military transport fleet. The deal, worth Rs 21,395 crore, involves the manufacture of 40 planes in India.
