Sinopec has acknowledged that the issues plaguing its existing 260MW Kuqa green hydrogen project in northwest China, as disclosed by Hydrogen Insight last month, will not be fully resolved until late 2025. The Chinese oil giant has inadvertently revealed that the facility in the Xinjiang region, touted as the world's largest, is currently operating at only approximately 20% of its intended capacity.

Hydrogen Insight's exclusive revelation detailed that the alkaline electrolysers at the plant, sourced from three different Chinese manufacturers (Cockerill Jingli, Longi, and Peric), all face distinct technical challenges but share a common issue—they cannot safely produce hydrogen when receiving electricity resulting in less than about 50% of their maximum output, according to research conducted by BloombergNEF (BNEF).

This poses a significant hurdle as the 260MW of electrolysers are directly powered by 361MW of solar power (along with wind energy purchased from the grid at an additional cost), leading to production levels far below the anticipated 20,000 tonnes of green hydrogen annually.

In response to BNEF's findings, which garnered widespread attention in China, Sinopec released two statements on Christmas Day via the Chinese social network website Weibo. These statements aimed to alter the narrative surrounding the project.
