Samsung expands Texas chip plant amidst AI chip supply deal

Samsung is set to enlarge its semiconductor chip facility located in Taylor, Texas, USA. The South Korean tech giant recently secured a contract to supply cutting-edge AI processing chips for a fabless semiconductor chip company, and the expansion of its chip plant in Taylor is likely a direct outcome of this agreement. The primary objective is to boost the company's overall chip production capacity.

Samsung is embarking on the construction of an additional building within its semiconductor chip plant in Taylor, encompassing approximately 2.7 million square feet. Construction is already underway, with Samsung enlisting the services of a local engineering firm to oversee the construction review and inspection processes. The new building is currently referred to as "Samsung Fabrication Plant 2," according to documents filed on Taylor City's website. The document outlines a development agreement between the City and Samsung, stipulating the City's commitment to allocate resources and expedite processes for the review, approval, and inspection of site development and building construction activities.

Positioned in the southwest sector of the city, the new building is an extension of the Taylor chip plant, which commenced construction in 2022 with an initial investment target of $17 billion. However, the projected cost has now escalated to $25 billion, attributed to increased construction expenses and the inclusion of the new building. Although Samsung has not disclosed the specific purpose of the new facility, speculations abound that it may serve as storage space for raw materials or be integrated into the chip production line.
