Pixxel launches MegaPixxel, spacecraft facility in Bengaluru

Pixxel has recently inaugurated its maiden spacecraft manufacturing facility, aptly named "MegaPixxel," situated in Bengaluru, India. The event, signifying a new phase in Pixxel's journey, witnessed the presence of S Somanath, Chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), alongside distinguished industry stakeholders and investors.

Encompassing an expansive 30,000 square feet, the MegaPixxel facility serves as a comprehensive hub for Spacecraft Assembly, Integration, and Testing (AIT), consolidating all satellite manufacturing services. This establishment underscores Pixxel's unwavering dedication to streamlining the satellite production process, covering the entire spectrum from conception to launch. It provides a pivotal space for the meticulous design, manufacturing, integration, and testing of Pixxel's satellites, ensuring they meet launch conditions before embarking on their journey to the launch site.

Awais Ahmed, CEO of Pixxel, expressed his thoughts on this significant milestone, stating, "The inauguration of the new facility marks a momentous milestone as Pixxel nears its fifth anniversary since inception. It will bolster our mission to build a health monitor for the planet. By increasing our capacity to build more satellites, we will deliver even more critical data to our customers faster so they can make informed decisions and address the needs of key industries such as agriculture, energy, forestry, and environmental monitoring."

The MegaPixxel facility, notable not only for its size but also for its ambition and capability, can handle over twenty satellites simultaneously at full capacity, ensuring a rapid turnaround time of six months per satellite. This efficiency positions the facility to potentially produce forty large satellites annually.

In terms of design, MegaPixxel stands out with its two modern clean rooms adhering to ISO Class 7 and ISO Class 8 standards. These clean rooms play a crucial role in safeguarding against contaminants that could compromise satellite functionality during the assembly and integration process. The facility also encompasses advanced labs for camera integration, electronics R&D, and electrical assembly, complemented by a mechanical workshop, a mission control room, and office space capable of accommodating over 200 employees.

Aligning with global calls for sustainability, Pixxel has integrated eco-friendly features into the facility. Notably, a wastewater treatment plant has been incorporated to facilitate water conservation and reduce dependency on external water sources. Additionally, the inclusion of smart heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems enhances energy efficiency and minimises the carbon footprint, highlighting Pixxel's commitment to environmental stewardship.

This new facility in Bengaluru is a strategic move for Pixxel as it prepares for an ambitious schedule of satellite launches, with six satellites slated for 2024 and an additional eighteen by 2025. These developments are poised to significantly propel Pixxel's mission of building a health monitor for the planet, providing critical data for informed decision-making across diverse industries.
