Nokia's Chennai factory milestone, 7 mn telecom units produced in 15 Year

Nokia proudly announced a significant milestone achieved by its Chennai factory, marking the production of seven million telecom units. This achievement coincides with the factory's fifteenth anniversary and underscores its pivotal role in bolstering telecom equipment manufacturing within the country.

The Chennai facility specialises in manufacturing a wide array of products, including 5G New Radio (5G NR), 5G massive Multiple Input, Multiple Output (MIMO) devices, 4G/LTE radios, and fiber broadband equipment. Approximately 50% of the production is exported, and the factory has substantially increased the localisation of components in 5G equipment manufacturing, doubling the previous rates.

Nokia's accomplishment aligns seamlessly with the Government of India’s 'Make in India' initiative, which promotes the development and production of goods within the country. The announcement took place in the presence of esteemed government officials during a ceremony held at the factory premises. As one of Nokia’s largest facilities worldwide, the Chennai factory serves as a major manufacturer of telecom infrastructure equipment, catering to both domestic and global markets, especially in the realm of 4G/5G networks.

Teemu Toiviainen, the Head of Global Manufacturing and EMS Management at Nokia, expressed pride in the Indian talent showcased at the Chennai factory. He highlighted the factory's evolution, from being the first in India to manufacture 5G NR to producing advanced 5G massive MIMO products and transport network elements. Toiviainen also emphasised Nokia's commitment to sustainability, noting that the factory operates primarily on wind and solar energy, contributing up to 81% of green energy consumption, with a goal to achieve 100% by 2025.
