Nasmyth Group celebrates manufacture of one million precision components in India

February 2017 – Nasmyth Group, a global precision engineering solution provider to the safety critical aerospace, defence and energy sectors, celebrated the scale and success of its operations in India as it accepted delivery in the UK of its one millionth precision machined component manufactured in India.

Nasmyth Group first established a foothold in India in 2009 and its commitment to develop and align skills in both the UK and India led to a decision to set up a supply chain liaison office in Bangalore.

Following four years of production proving the first part manufactured to full production standards was received in 2013. The liaison office opened in the same year to manage the planning, expediting, engineering, production, cost and quality of components produced by partner companies across India. These products are delivered to Nasmyth in the UK and are then further processed prior to delivery to aerospace Primes and Tier 1 suppliers worldwide.

Since opening its liaison office, the Nasmyth team has developed and mentored a range of partner suppliers in Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad and Coimbatore. These manufacturing companies across southern India employ more than 1,000 people. The scale of demand for high quality products and the ability of Nasmyth’s Indian suppliers to meet the requirements of Nasmyth’s customers has resulted in a doubling of output from Nasmyth’s Indian suppliers’ year on year. Having shipped 500,000 components during 2016 Nasmyth Group recently reached the milestone of 1 million parts shipped from India to the UK.

Peter Smith, CEO of Nasmyth Group said, “We provide the best quality engineering services and products for our customers and we are delighted to see that production in India has continued to exceed our exacting standards. Nasmyth Group and our partners have achieved many things together, including significantly increasing production and controlling costs. Accepting delivery of the one millionth component from India is a major milestone for the combined team as we, and our customers, see the benefit of Nasmyth’s decision to look to India to complement our UK engineering and manufacturing capabilities. The success is a testament to our partners’ dedicated and hardworking teams in India.”

Between 2010 and 2015 the UK aerospace industry saw production growth of 30% compared to 2% for the UK economy and sustained growth is expected to continue [1]. Meeting this global challenge is a priority for Nasmyth Group and the number of components manufactured in India, which equates to 5% of the group’s total global sales, is expected to grow exponentially as customers continue to recognise the benefits of the Nasmyth approach as they see it to be “in line” with their own strategic business plan.

Peter added, “Prime Minister Modi initiated his Make in India policy in 2014 to encourage commissioning and manufacturing in India. The policy has been widely hailed as a success and in 2015 the country emerged as the top destination globally for foreign direct investment, receiving US $63 billion [2]. The Nasmyth liaison office does a substantial and successful job of managing our Indian supply chain as we rapidly expand the excellent resources and expert skills that we, and our partners, can make available to our customers.”

Peter concluded “I feel with our unrivalled database, experience and working knowledge of the Indian manufacturing community we are in an excellence position to offer further manufacturing solutions utilising the Indian Supply Chain”.

The Nasmyth liaison team will soon be expanding in to a new purpose built office in Bangalore. It will do so alongside the Group’s newly inaugurated company, Nasmyth India Private Limited. The new company will provide design engineering resources across the Nasmyth Group and was inaugurated at an official ceremony in Bangalore on 13th February. The co-location of the two Nasmyth ventures in India will result in further growth including an office to be established in Chennai and in the sustained development of the excellent relationship between Nasmyth’s UK operations and their Indian partners.
