Maruti Suzuki's Gujarat plant hits 3 mn production milestone, fastest in firm’s history

Maruti Suzuki India has proudly announced that Suzuki Motor Gujarat (SMG), previously an exclusive subsidiary of Japan's Suzuki Motor Corporation (SMC), has achieved a significant production milestone of 3 million units. This accomplishment makes SMG the fastest among all Suzuki facilities to reach this impressive feat.

Maruti's board of directors recently granted approval for the acquisition of SMG from SMC, with a total purchase consideration amounting to Rs 12,841.1 crore. As a result, the largest carmaker in the country now holds ownership of SMG.

The production journey at the SMG facility began in February 2017. It marked the production of 1 million units in October 2020 (within 3 years and 9 months), 2 million units in August 2022 (within 5 years and 7 months), and the remarkable milestone of 3 million units in December 2023 (within 6 years and 11 months). Impressively, the last 1 million units were manufactured in a mere 17 months.

Situated in Hansalpur, SMG boasts an annual production capacity of 750,000 units. The facility currently manufactures models such as Baleno, Swift, Dzire, Fronx, and Tour S, catering to both domestic and international markets.

SMG's journey included the operation of its first plant in February 2017, the second in January 2019, and the third in April 2021. The production of export models commenced in March 2018.

Expressing enthusiasm, Hisashi Takeuchi, Managing Director and CEO of Maruti Suzuki India, stated, "We are delighted to achieve the 3 million cumulative production milestones in Gujarat. This success is attributed to the supportive ecosystem for manufacturing activities in the state. We extend our gratitude to our supplier partners who have invested and collaborated to boost production at the facility."

Takeuchi also highlighted the strategic significance of acquiring SMG, emphasising the enhanced production flexibility it brings. He shared plans for the Gujarat plant to undertake the production of battery electric vehicles, expected to commence in the fiscal year 2025.
