India's National Green Hydrogen Mission Aims to Slash Fossil Fuel Imports by 2030

Union Minister R K Singh announced that India's National Green Hydrogen Mission, boasting a capacity of 5 million metric tonnes (MMT), could lead to a reduction of fossil fuel imports worth Rs 1 lakh crore by 2030. The Union Cabinet greenlit the mission in January 2023, allocating Rs 19,744 crore to establish India as a global hub for manufacturing green hydrogen, a sustainable energy source.

Singh emphasised the potential of green hydrogen to replace fossil fuels, such as natural gas, both as an energy source and feedstock. This shift would contribute significantly to decreasing the country's reliance on imported fossil fuels, according to the Minister for New and Renewable Energy, who addressed the Rajya Sabha.

The mission's objectives include substituting grey hydrogen with green hydrogen in various industries, including fertiliser production, petroleum refining, steel, and shipping. This substitution aims to reduce carbon emissions and decrease dependence on imported fossil fuels, Singh explained.

Providing insight into the production process, Singh noted that generating 1 kilogram of green hydrogen through electrolysis requires approximately 10 liters of demineralised water. Consequently, the annual demineralised water requirement for the targeted 5 MMT of green hydrogen production amounts to about 50 Million Cubic Meters (MCM).

Anticipating the location of green hydrogen production plants, Singh shared that industry feedback suggests a majority will be situated near port locations. In such cases, desalinised seawater could be a viable resource for green hydrogen production. However, Singh highlighted the need for project developers to adhere to state regulations regarding water supply, as water management falls under the jurisdiction of individual states.
