Indian govt targets 70% local it hardware production in 3 years

The Indian government, according to Minister of State for Electronics and IT, Rajeev Chandrasekhar, has set a target to fulfill 70% of the country's IT hardware demand through domestic production within the next three years. This initiative aims to reduce reliance on imports from untrusted sources. Discussions within the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MEITY) suggest a potential delay of 9-12 months in implementing import duty restrictions on PCs, laptops, and tablets, providing temporary relief to major manufacturers like Apple, Samsung, and Lenovo.

The government plans to curtail the import of parts and components from China, emphasising the importance of trusted sourcing and locations. Efforts are underway to incentivise companies to engage in domestic manufacturing under the 'Make in India' campaign, aiming to minimise dependence on imports. While Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar did not specify any particular region, he emphasised the government's desire to significantly increase the proportion of locally sourced components.

Chandrasekhar stressed the need for a trustworthy supply chain to support India's internet infrastructure, cloud services, and user base. The government's focus is on ensuring that a substantial portion of the supply chain is either of Indian origin or manufactured within the country.
