India signs deal with Russia for advanced Pantsir air defence systems

Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Rosoboronexport (ROE), Russia's state-owned arms exporter, to cooperate on advanced variants of the Pantsir air defence missile-gun system. The agreement, formalised during the 5th India-Russia Inter-Governmental Commission (IRIGC) Subgroup meeting in Goa, reflects ongoing defence collaboration between India and Russia aimed at strengthening India's air defence capabilities.

The Pantsir system is a mobile, highly adaptable defence platform designed to shield military installations and critical infrastructure from a range of aerial threats, including aircraft, drones, and precision-guided missiles. It combines short- to medium-range surface-to-air missiles with dual 30mm cannons, providing a layered defence against threats. Equipped with advanced radar and tracking capabilities, the Pantsir can engage targets up to 36 kilometers away and at altitudes reaching 15 kilometers, enabling swift interception of fast-moving threats.

Through this partnership, BDL and ROE plan to explore manufacturing, technology transfer, and joint development opportunities for Pantsir variants, aligning with India’s 'Make in India' initiative for self-reliance in defence production. The Pantsir system’s adaptability and multi-target capabilities will be an essential addition to India's air defence, bolstering its preparedness against regional threats and enhancing existing defence frameworks.

This MoU reinforces India’s commitment to a robust defence partnership with Russia, ensuring critical technologies are customised to address India’s specific security needs.
