IIT Madras researchers patent Innovative Mobile Renewable Energy System

Scientists from the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) have developed an innovative 'Combined Power Generation Technology,' now patented, capable of harnessing electricity from both tidal and wind energy sources. This ground-breaking technology is designed to function as a mobile power generation, transmission, and storage unit.

The system functions as an energy converter, generating electricity in coastal regions to alleviate the demand for conventional electricity sources. Its deployment is flexible, tailored to the specific power needs of the coastal area in question. Researchers are actively working on enhancing its scalability and affordability, employing cutting-edge techniques such as 3D printing.

The core concept involves mounting a wind turbine on the roof of a vehicle, utilising the converter technology to harvest wind energy and transform tidal energy into electrical power. The resulting energy output is entirely renewable and sustainable. Additionally, the vehicle's rooftop solar panel can power various other equipment, making the entire setup highly efficient and eco-friendly.

This pioneering research was led by Sadham Usean Ramasamy, a PhD Research Scholar in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at IIT Madras, and A Seshadri Sekhar, formerly the Head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at IIT Madras, who currently serves as the Director of IIT Palakkad.

Sekhar highlighted that this invention utilises a single vertical axis wind turbine, a horizontal converter mechanism, and does not rely on a hydraulic set generator based on pendulum support. The converter incorporates height adjustable guider support mechanisms to regulate the elliptical plate's height attached to the main shaft. Importantly, this design avoids the challenges posed by horizontal axis turbines and operates entirely onshore, eliminating issues related to severe corrosion.

Regarding the timeline for field deployment, Sekhar noted that the converter system's relocation might be necessary based on the power demand fluctuations in the coastal region. However, the energy output from this system remains entirely renewable and sustainable. The integrated solar panel on the vehicle's roof further optimises energy usage by powering additional equipment, making this innovation a significant step toward clean and efficient mobile power generation.
