Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) has secured its largest single donation ever—a substantial Rs 2.28 billion—from alumnus Krishna Chivukula. The donation was announced at a press conference in Chennai on August 6, 2024, where Chivukula was joined by V. Kamakoti, Director, IIT Madras.

Chivukula, an M.Tech graduate of IIT Madras (1970) and founder of INDO US MIM Tec in Bengaluru, made the donation in his personal capacity. His company is a pioneer in Metal Injection Molding (MIM) technology, which involves the production of small metal and ceramic components with intricate geometries in high volumes. Chivukula, who also holds an MBA from Harvard Business School, introduced this emerging technology to India in 1997 and has since established his company as a leader in the field, with a projected turnover nearing Rs 10 billion.

In recognition of his generosity, IIT Madras has named a new academic block the Krishna Chivukula Block. The donation will support various initiatives, including scholarships for international students, a Research Excellence Grant Program, an Undergraduate Fellowship Program for new students, a Sports Scholar Program, the development of Shaastra Magazine, and maintenance of the Krishna Chivukula Block.

Chivukula expressed his motivation for the donation, stating, “I donated because it brings me happiness. Happiness contributes to a healthy life. I also studied at IIT Bombay and will be contributing to that institute as well. I hope this donation inspires other entrepreneurs and philanthropists to support institutions across India.”

In the 2023-24 fiscal year, IIT Madras raised a record Rs 5.13 billion, a 135% increase from the previous year. The institute saw 48 donors contributing over Rs 10 million each, including 16 alumni and 32 corporate partners. Alumni donations alone totalled Rs 3.67 billion, marking a 282% increase from the previous year.
