Hindalco Industries Ltd entered into a technology partnership with Italy-based Metra SpA, marking a significant development in India's aluminium industry. The primary goal of this collaboration, as outlined in an official exchange filing by Hindalco, is to facilitate the production of large-scale aluminium extrusion and fabrication technology, particularly for the construction of high-speed aluminium rail coaches within India.

This partnership leverages Hindalco's extensive expertise in aluminium manufacturing and combines it with Metra's advanced knowledge in aluminum extrusion, machining, and welding. Together, they aim to bring world-class technology to India, technology that has hitherto been primarily accessible in Europe, China, Japan, and a few other countries.

This strategic alliance also serves as a pivotal platform for Hindalco to support the ambitious modernisation program of Indian Railways, which operates the world's largest railway network, according to the company.

Satish Pai, Managing Director of Hindalco Industries, expressed his satisfaction with the collaboration, stating, "We are delighted to partner with Metra to introduce a new era of aluminum extrusions for passenger trains in India. This aligns with our efforts to enhance aluminum capabilities in various applications, including commercial vehicles, freight wagons, electric vehicles, and passenger trains. Our combined expertise will undoubtedly improve the efficiency, durability, and sustainability of these trains, setting new standards for the Indian rail industry."

In the realm of railway technology, extruded aluminium plays a leading role due to its combination of reduced weight and mechanical strength. With over 60 years of experience in manufacturing aluminium extrusions for the transport sector, Metra specialises in the fabrication and machining of railway extrusions, providing the Italian company with additional capabilities to design and supply high-end sub-assemblies for the railway industry.

Enrico Zampedri, CEO of Metra SpA, highlighted the exciting opportunity this collaboration presents, stating, "Collaborating with Hindalco Industries provides an exciting opportunity to showcase the capabilities of our aluminium extrusion technology on a global stage. Together, we are poised to redefine aluminium extrusions for high-speed train manufacturing in India, merging strong Italian expertise in this field with Indian market knowledge."

Notably, last October, Hindalco launched India's first all-aluminium lightweight freight rake, which promises to enhance speed and payload capacity while also saving over 14,500 tonnes of CO2 over its lifetime. The company also plans to introduce three more designs of freight wagons in the coming months, each tailored for specific commodities such as cement and food grains. This highlights Hindalco's commitment to driving innovation and sustainability in the Indian railway sector.
