GM's Talegaon Plant Gets EPA Award

General Motors (GM) India's manufacturing facility located at Talegaon in Maharashtra has been recognised by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for reducing energy intensity by 12 per cent. It is one of the 54 plants of GM across the world which had volunteered to meet an energy reduction challenge by the United States. This reduction in energy consumption has enabled the plant to win the EPA's Energy Star Challenge for Industry Award. To meet this benchmark, a plant's facilities need to reduce energy intensity by at least 10 per cent within five years. GM India's Talegaon manufacturing plant reduction avoided 4,419 tonnes of CO2 from entering the atmosphere.

From 2005 to 2010, energy usage in all of GM's global plants has come down by 28 per cent. A new benchmark to reduce global energy intensity by 20 per cent for itself has been set by the American auto major for its Talegaon unit. Praising the efforts of the team for the Talegaon plant achievement, Lowell Paddock, President and Managing Director (MD) of GM India said, "To achieve the challenge for industry award, our manufacturing plant used various innovative energy-saving strategies like adoption of energy efficient designs & technologies, optimization of process parameters, usage of reliable process controls and lighting systems among other energy saving methods to reduce energy consumption."

"The total amount of energy savings across all GM manufacturing plants is USD 90 million and most of the plants are located in the US and Asian countries," said Mike Robinson, GM's vice president. Further, an Energy STAR Partner of the Year Award was awarded to GM for its distinguished Energy Management Programme. GM India also received the third prize for Energy Conservation at the National Energy Conservation Awards in 2010. A sustainability report and environmental blog is also available for more detailed information on GM's commitment towards conservation of the environment.
