FFG subsidiary MAG IAS GmbH (MAG) has been awarded a significant contract to deliver a highly automated production line for forged railway wheels to Ramkrishna Titagarh Rail Wheels Ltd. (RKTR) in India. The multi-million euro project aligns with the Indian government's ‘Make in India’ initiative, aiming to position the country as a globally competitive industrial hub.

The turnkey solution includes machining and testing lines for railway wheel production, featuring equipment from FFG’s MAG and HESSAPP brands. This system will be installed at RKTR’s Chennai facility and is designed to produce 100,000 railway wheels annually. Capable of manufacturing six types of railway wheels without changeover, the system is also scalable, allowing for doubled production capacity if required. FFG has employed advanced planning techniques, including creating a digital twin and 3D simulations, to ensure precise execution and fast commissioning. The system’s pre-calculated energy consumption for various production scenarios supports sustainable manufacturing practices.

Key components of the system include MAG SPECHT 800 horizontal machining centres, HESSAPP VDM 1600 vertical lathes, and automation for machining and testing cells, along with measuring machines, a balancing station, ultrasonic testing units, and magnetic particle inspection stations. The centrally controlled system will allow seamless monitoring and precise tracking of each component, ensuring the highest quality standards for the wheels.

Shashank M P, Managing Director, MAG IAS India Ltd commented, “This combination of cutting-edge German technology and local production will help RKTR meet the Indian railway sector’s needs while maintaining international standards.” He emphasised that FFG has been a leader in providing turnkey manufacturing systems for railway wheel machining, with several projects already deployed globally.

Dr Sebastian Schöning, CEO, Fair Friend Group, stated, “The award of this contract highlights our technological expertise, the quality of our machines, and our established presence in India through FFG India. The strong collaboration between our teams in Germany and India has instilled confidence in RKTR to select us as their partner.”

The production line is expected to start operations in Q1 2026 and will deliver a total of 1.54 million railway wheels to Indian Railways over the next 20 years. This project further supports India’s growing infrastructure while reinforcing FFG’s footprint in the region.
Fair Friend Group (FFG) is a global leader in providing turnkey solutions, offering high-quality machine tools and machining centres for manufacturing railway wheels, axles, engines, crankcases, and aerospace components.
