Delta Electronics, Ceres Power join forces to advance hydrogen energy solutions

Delta Electronics, Inc. has officially entered into a long-term collaboration agreement with Ceres Power Limited, a global leader in solid oxide fuel cell and electrochemical technology. As part of the agreement, Delta will gain access to Ceres' Hydrogen energy stack technology portfolio through technology transfer and licensing, involving an investment of approximately GBP43 million.

In this strategic partnership, Delta aims to merge Ceres' energy stack technology with its own cutting-edge power electronics and thermal management technologies. The objective is to create solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) and solid oxide electrolysis cell (SOEC) systems tailored for hydrogen energy applications. The anticipated production commencement is set for the end of 2026, with ambitious plans for future scalability.

The SOFC and SOEC systems developed through this collaboration are poised to enhance Delta's sustainable solutions across diverse sectors, including chemicals, energy, transportation, and steel.

Delta's CEO, Ping Cheng, emphasised the significance of hydrogen in the global transition towards net-zero, citing its high heating value and zero CO2 emission potential. Cheng highlighted the reliability and high efficiency of Hydrogen SOFC systems in electricity generation, making them ideal for micro-grid applications and mission-critical facilities. The SOEC systems, according to Cheng, will play a crucial role in industries adopting green hydrogen for manufacturing processes.

Phil Caldwell, CEO of Ceres, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership with Delta, emphasising Delta's global expertise in mass manufacturing, power electronics, and system integration. Caldwell sees Delta as well-positioned to deliver efficient clean hydrogen solutions using both SOFC and SOEC technologies.

In addition to licensing key energy stack technologies, Delta plans to establish a 'Net-zero Science Laboratory' at its Tainan manufacturing complex. This laboratory will focus on developing cutting-edge zero-carbon technologies, including hydrogen energy, and enhancing Delta's research and development capabilities in related application fields.

Delta envisions carrying out product development and production line integration at its Tainan plant from 2024 to 2026, with engineering service support from Ceres. Production of the technology is expected to commence by the end of 2026.

Looking ahead, Delta plans to integrate its diverse smart energy solutions, such as microgrid applications and energy management platforms, with the hydrogen energy systems. The goal is to offer comprehensive and flexible low-carbon infrastructure solutions to customers.

Ceres' stack technology serves as the core for both SOFC and SOEC, offering high power generation efficiency. In SOFC applications, it can generate electricity, water, and heat through the reaction of oxygen with hydrogen or methane. With a power generation efficiency reaching up to 85% with a heat recovery system, SOFC surpasses the efficiency of centralised gas-fired power generation units. The proximity of SOFC to electricity demand points makes it suitable for facilities requiring stable power, avoiding transmission losses and other potential instabilities during distribution.
