Localisation is Delta Electronics’ key strategy in India: Andy Sun

The Taiwan-based Delta Electronics, a global innovator in power electronics, presented its latest innovations in AI-based robotics and automation, as well as smart energy and data centre infrastructure solutions at Hannover Messe 2025. With three manufacturing facilities and two R&D centres, Delta has a strong presence in India. In this interview with Rakesh Rao, Andy Sun, Deputy Head Industrial Automation, Delta Electronics, discusses manufacturing trends and Delta’s future growth plans for the industrial automation division.

What is the current focus of Delta Electronics’ Industrial Automation Business Group (IABG)?
Delta’s Industrial Automation Business Group (IABG) focuses on industrial automation solutions, and we have seen it evolve significantly over the years, from basic automation to digitalisation, and now moving into intelligent manufacturing. Our goal is to help global industries transition through these phases with our advanced solutions.

What are some key trends you are observing in the manufacturing industry?
Over the past two decades, manufacturing has moved from basic automation to digitalisation, and is now entering the age of intelligence. One driving factor is the labour shortage; fewer people are willing to work in factories, which make automation and intelligent systems critical. Delta was founded in 1971, and IABG was established in 1995. Initially, we offered basic automation components like drives and motion control systems. Now, our portfolio includes sensors, cameras, software, robotics, and system integration. We are not just selling components; we are enabling entire smart factories and production lines by integrating hardware with software platforms.

How do you tailor your offerings to suit varying levels of automation in different global markets, especially in developing countries?
That’s a great question. In emerging markets, labour costs are typically lower than in developed countries. But it is not just the cost; precision and consistency in production are equally important. Human labour can lead to errors due to fatigue, cultural differences, or deviation from standard procedures. To tackle this, we offer technologies such as standard automation platforms, AI, and automated optical inspection (AOI) systems. These help manufacturers in emerging markets improve accuracy and quality while maintaining cost efficiency.

What’s your view of the Indian market in particular, given its large number of small and medium manufacturers?
India is a very important and promising market for Delta. With a massive population and growing manufacturing base, we saw the potential early and have been present here for over 20 years. We established a manufacturing plant in Krishnagiri (Tamil Nadu) and an R&D centre as well. Our goal has always been to tap into India’s talent pool and contribute to local development. That’s why we focus not only on manufacturing but also on local R&D—developing local for local products tailored to Indian market needs. This also helps us reduce dependency on imports and strengthens our local footprint.

Could you elaborate on your efforts to localise solutions for India?
Yes, localisation is a key strategy. We have invested heavily in R&D in India to create solutions designed by local engineers for Indian manufacturers. We also have dedicated solution teams here that integrate hardware and software to deliver customised automation for Indian industries. Furthermore, we work closely with key local accounts and machine builders to co-develop solutions that suit their specific needs. Our long-term strategy is to empower Indian talent to eventually lead the entire product development cycle—from concept to execution.

Which industries are your major customers in India and globally?
Globally and in India, our largest customers are in the machine-building sector. We started by supplying inverters, motors, and controllers to machine builders, and they remain a core customer base today. These OEMs embed our components into their machines to deliver complete automation solutions. We also serve global customers through ODM and OEM models, especially in America and Europe, by providing private-label solutions.

How is your collaborative robot (cobot) business progressing globally and in India?
We launched our cobot in the second half of last year. Cobot is seeing strong demand, particularly in the US and Europe, where labour costs are high. Interest in cobots has risen significantly post-launch. In India, the demand is also growing, but pricing remains a concern. To address this, we are planning to launch an Asia-specific version of the cobot this year, more affordable but still high-performing, to better suit price-sensitive markets like India.

What sets Delta apart in the industrial automation space?
Our strength lies in our full-stack capability, from components to integrated solutions, from global presence to local customisation. We are not just offering automation products; we are enabling the entire transition from manual to intelligent manufacturing. With long-term investments in markets like India, and a commitment to local R&D and talent development, we are building sustainable, future-ready solutions for the global manufacturing sector.

What are Delta’s future growth plans for the industrial automation division?
Originally, most of our R&D was concentrated in Taiwan, but due to geopolitical uncertainties, we are now diversifying globally. We have set up manufacturing and R&D centres around the world. One of our core strategies is local for local, for example, India for India, China for China. In India, we plan to continue expanding our R&D team. Initially, Indian engineers will collaborate with the Taiwan R&D team, and eventually, we aim for them to independently lead product development tailored to Indian needs. Once these locally developed products prove their quality and innovation, we can even take them global. That’s the long-term vision, local innovation leading to global growth.
