Chinese researchers predict circular economy in EV Batteries by 2059

Chinese researchers have forecasted that China is poised to achieve a circular economy in electric vehicle batteries ahead of Europe and the US. According to scientists from the University of Mnster in Germany, China is expected to accomplish this milestone from 2059 onwards by recycling batteries to meet its primary lithium demand for electric vehicles, sourced through mining.

In contrast, Europe and the US are projected to attain this circular economy goal after 2070, as per the research findings published in the journal Resources Conservation and Recycling. The analysis focused on determining when the demand for crucial battery raw materials—lithium, cobalt, and nickel—could be entirely satisfied through recycling in the three regions and when a fully circular economy would become feasible.

Regarding cobalt, the researchers estimated that China could meet its requirements through recycling earliest by 2045, while Europe and the US would achieve this by 2052 and 2056, respectively. For nickel needs, China was predicted to achieve recycling sufficiency by 2046, followed by Europe in 2058 and the US from 2064 onwards.

The research team utilized data from ongoing research and market forecasts related to battery production, sales, and raw material demand. Employing dynamic material flow analysis, they calculated future demand and the availability of recyclable raw materials. The researchers emphasized the concept of "complete circularity," where material supply equals demand, and explored the potential of reaching equilibrium sooner than current projections.

Professor Stephan von Delft affirmed the likelihood of accelerated electrification in the automotive industry playing a crucial role in achieving circularity sooner. He noted that a faster adoption of electric vehicles would increase the availability of batteries for recycling. Additionally, PhD student Jannis Wesselkmper highlighted the potential for earlier material demand satisfaction through recycling by reducing battery size and avoiding secondary uses, such as stationary storage units for solar power.
