ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India (AM/NS India) has commissioned a state-of-the-art Continuous Galvanising Line (CGL) at its flagship Hazira facility in Gujarat. With this, AM/NS India becomes the first steel producer in the country capable of manufacturing Advanced High-Strength Steel (AHSS) with strength levels up to 1180 megapascals (MPa) – a crucial milestone for the safety, strength, and sustainability of next-generation automotive applications.

This commissioning forms part of AM/NS India’s ?60,000-crore expansion project inaugurated in 2022 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The large-scale initiative aims to develop comprehensive upstream and downstream steelmaking facilities, significantly expanding production capacity across the value chain.

The new CGL, embedded with world-class technology from joint venture partners ArcelorMittal and Nippon Steel, will manufacture both Galvanised (GI) and Galvannealed (GA) coated flat steel products. It includes licensed offerings from both global firms and supports India’s Corporate Average Fuel Efficiency (CAFE) Phase III norms through lightweight, high-formability, and recyclable materials ideal for modern mobility.

Dilip Oommen, Chief Executive Officer of AM/NS India, said the new galvanising line marks a defining chapter in India’s steelmaking journey. “This facility symbolises our readiness to match the quality benchmarks of developed economies. As we contribute to the vision of Viksit Bharat@2047, our aim is to supply steel solutions that enable national growth while reducing import dependence.”

He further added, “With ongoing support from our parent companies, we are producing the highest-strength steel ever manufactured in India. This enhances our capacity to serve the evolving needs of the automotive sector while progressing toward self-reliance.”

The facility bolsters AM/NS India’s downstream capabilities by expanding its value-added product portfolio. It strengthens the company’s commitment to the Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat initiatives and helps reduce the gap between domestic demand and supply of high-end automotive steel.

Featuring cutting-edge environmental solutions, the CGL achieves a significant reduction in CO? emissions compared to conventional units. Technologies such as waste heat recovery, regenerative drives, thermal energy control, and the use of electrolytic hydrogen contribute to the company’s alignment with India’s Green Steel Taxonomy and broader climate objectives.

As part of its strategic roadmap, AM/NS India aims to increase its Hazira production capacity from 9 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) to 15 MTPA, and eventually 24 MTPA, encompassing both upstream and downstream operations.

In parallel, the company has initiated land acquisition for a new integrated steel plant in Andhra Pradesh and plans to establish additional facilities in Odisha, further strengthening its pan-India presence.

The company is also advancing its decarbonisation agenda by integrating renewable energy sources, deploying energy-efficient technologies, and exploring low-carbon steelmaking pathways in line with national and global sustainability goals.

AM/NS India is a joint venture between global steel giants ArcelorMittal and Nippon Steel. As one of India’s leading integrated flat carbon steel producers, it has an annual crude steel capacity of 9 million tonnes and a pellet production capacity of 20 million tonnes. The company delivers a wide range of flat steel products, including value-added steel, with state-of-the-art downstream capabilities.
