Apple explores diversified manufacturing in India, discusses partnerships beyond China

In an effort to expand its manufacturing operations in India, Apple is currently engaged in discussions with various component makers such as Aequs Group and Rayprus Technologies. Preliminary talks are also underway with Dixon Technologies, signalling a shift away from China in the production of iPhones.

Rayprus Technologies, a subsidiary of Foxconn, specialises in the production of high-quality precision cameras and lenses. On the other hand, Aequs Group is involved in the manufacturing of consumer durable goods and aerospace parts within India. The report emphasises that Apple is exploring alternative manufacturing locations due to delays in government approvals for imports, steering away from its heavy reliance on China.

Presently, Tata Electronics stands as Apple's sole vendor in India, with plans to double its casing facility. Noteworthy manufacturing players in India include Foxconn, Pegatron, and Wistron, the latter of which was taken over by Tata Electronics.

Recent reports reveal Foxconn's intentions to invest an additional Rs 13,911 crore in Karnataka, following approval for an initial investment of Rs 8,000 crore in the southern state.

Furthermore, Foxconn is contemplating the establishment of worker dormitories in Tamil Nadu to boost manufacturing activities in the country. The report indicates that Foxconn, through its subsidiary FIT, plans to construct a factory in 2024 for producing Apple's AirPods at a site near Hyderabad's airport called Kongara Kalan. The facility is expected to include a dormitory for its workforce.

Foxconn's utilisation of dormitories has been a longstanding practice in China and Vietnam, where a significant portion of Apple device production occurs.
