JSW Cement's Vijayanagar works set for 12 MTPA expansion and sustainable growth

Presently, the Vijayanagar Works manufactures both Portland Slag Cement (PSC) and Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag (GGBS) cement, with a current annual production capacity of 600,000 tons.
JSW Cement Limited is embarking on a significant expansion project at its Vijayanagar Works Slag Grinding & Mixing Unit. This ambitious endeavor involves boosting the production capacity from 6 MTPA to an impressive 12 MTPA.
Located in the Torangallu Village, Sandur taluk of Ballari district, Karnataka, JSW Cement's Vijayanagar Works is nestled in close proximity to the JSW Steel plant. This cement mill has been a pivotal part of their operations.
Presently, the Vijayanagar Works manufactures both Portland Slag Cement (PSC) and Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag (GGBS) cement, with a current annual production capacity of 600,000 tons. Notably, in the fiscal year 2021-22, the dispatches of cement and GGBS from this facility surged remarkably by 37%, reaching a total of 3.20 million MT, compared to 2.37 million MT in FY 2020-21.
Moreover, the dispatches of screened slag and GBS witnessed an impressive growth of 70%, surging to 1.51 million MT in FY 2021-22, from 0.89 million MT in FY 2020-21. These statistics underscore JSW Cement's unwavering commitment to growth and operational efficiency.
In the past, the company has invested a substantial sum of Rs 1111 Crores in this facility. In their pursuit to double the production capacity to 12 MTPA, they are gearing up to make an additional investment of Rs 1215 crores, a move anticipated to create numerous direct and indirect employment opportunities.
The Vijayanagar Works, inaugurated in 2003, comprises two manufacturing units within a sprawling 150-acre campus under the JSW Group's umbrella. Its strategic adjacency to the JSW Steel complex ensures a consistent and abundant supply of slag from the steel mill.
Embracing circular economy principles and resource conservation, JSW Cement's factories ingeniously utilise industrial waste, like slag from JSW steel plants, to produce blended cement. This eco-friendly product not only champions environmental sustainability but also boasts superior strength compared to conventional cement.
At JSW Cement's Vijayanagar Works and other facilities, clinker is expertly blended with additional cementitious materials such as fly ash and slag to create blended cement. This results in a substantially reduced carbon footprint in comparison to Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC). Both Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag (GGBS) and Portland Slag Cement (PSC) prominently feature slag, leading to reduced consumption of virgin limestone, a lower clinker factor, and, consequently, diminished emissions and energy consumption.
In a bid to enhance sustainability, JSW Cement's Vijayanagar Works has partnered with JSW Energy to establish an 8 MW Ground-mounted solar power plant, effectively reducing the unit cost of power.
