SED Wins Contract for India’s First Boilerless Green Sugar Refinery

Spray Engineering Devices Limited (SED), a leader in sustainable industrial engineering, has secured a turnkey contract to build India’s first boilerless greenfield sugar refinery at Kandla, Gujarat. In addition to executing the project, SED will undertake a long-term Operations and Maintenance (O&M) contract to ensure sustained performance and efficiency beyond commissioning.

Strategically located near India’s export corridors, the refinery will process 1,000–1,500 tonnes per day (TPD) and is scheduled for completion by 31 March 2027. The facility incorporates sustainability innovations, including Zero Water Consumption through closed-loop moisture recovery from raw sugar, and Lime Recalcination for internal recovery and reuse of lime, reducing waste solids. Its boilerless design, powered entirely by solar and wind energy, establishes a new benchmark for circular engineering. This will be the world’s first boilerless sugar refinery operating with zero water consumption and zero emissions.

Vivek Verma, Managing Director, SED, said, “This project is the culmination of SED’s mission to decouple industrial growth from environmental depletion. By achieving 99 per cent sugar recovery and zero water consumption, we are proving that sugar refining can be a circular process.”

The refinery targets Zero CO2 Emissions, aligning with global ESG mandates and strengthening India’s position in green manufacturing technology. It will produce export-quality sugar (<15 ICUMSA) while processing high-colour raw sugar inputs up to 1200 ICUMSA. Energy consumption will be limited to approximately 70 kWh per tonne, and lime consumption will be around 1 kg per tonne of sugar, supported by recalcination.

Pravin Kumar Shishodiya, Managing Director, Fullon Sugar Private Limited, added, “We are proud to collaborate with SED on this landmark project. By combining our expertise with SED’s engineering leadership, we are setting a new global benchmark for sustainable sugar refining and reinforcing India’s position as a hub for green manufacturing.”

Located at Kandla, the refinery will serve domestic and export markets with high-quality sugar produced under clean industrial conditions. The contract reinforces SED’s role in supporting heavy industry’s transition towards India’s 2070 Net Zero goals.
