India urged to expand local vaccine manufacturing and research: GTRI

India should focus on expanding its local vaccine manufacturing and research capabilities to enhance control over the safety and effectiveness of pharmaceutical products, according to a report by the Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI).

The think tank recommended that the Indian government investigate all adverse health events post-vaccination. This step, it suggests, could improve the transparency, safety, and efficacy of future vaccine rollouts.

“Expanding local vaccine production and research will enable India to better address vaccine safety, ensuring that vaccines are tailored to the country's specific health needs and population characteristics,” the report stated.

This call for expansion gains further relevance following the release of The Pfizer Papers: Crimes Against Humanity in October 2024, which has sparked global debate on vaccine safety, ethics, and transparency.

Ajay Srivastava, Founder, GTRI, emphasised, “As the world prepares for future pandemics, insights from The Pfizer Papers can lay the groundwork for safer, more effective, and more trustworthy vaccination strategies, prioritising public health over profit in global health responses.”
