India sets ambition to become global drone manufacturing hub: Rajnath Singh

India is positioning itself to become a global leader in drone manufacturing as new technologies reshape modern warfare, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh announced. Speaking at the Manohar Parrikar Institute for Defence Studies and Analyses, Singh emphasised the government's commitment to "adaptive defence"—an approach that prepares proactively for future threats by anticipating rather than merely reacting to them.

Singh outlined adaptive defence as a strategy requiring situational awareness, flexibility, resilience, and integration with advanced technologies to respond effectively to unpredictable challenges. He urged this approach as essential for India’s defence, highlighting that protecting the nation’s future requires not only securing borders but also strengthening national self-reliance.

The government has launched multiple initiatives aimed at transforming India into a global hub for drone manufacturing. This effort aligns with India's Make in India and Aatmanirbhar Bharat programs, with drone and swarm technologies becoming increasingly integral to modern warfare by blending traditional dimensions of conflict—land, air, and sea.

Singh discussed the evolving landscape of warfare, shaped by emerging technologies like AI, cybersecurity, and hybrid warfare. Recognising these changes, India has introduced the Chief of Defence Staff position, promoted inter-service cooperation, and enhanced training curriculums. Additionally, Singh highlighted the importance of international collaboration to address complex modern security issues, particularly in cyberspace and quantum technology.

India’s adaptive defence approach and focus on indigenising drone manufacturing signal its readiness to lead in next-generation defence technology.
