Hindustan Zinc, the world’s largest integrated zinc producer, has made significant strides in animal welfare and biodiversity conservation, positively impacting over 8.7 lakh animals through health camps, conservation projects, and community-led initiatives since 2016.
A landmark initiative under this programme is the Rs 50 million MoU with the Udaipur Forest Department to develop the Baghdarra Crocodile Conservation Reserve. The project focuses on restoring crocodile habitats with 5,000 saplings, water conservation structures, and eco-trails, benefiting over 200 species and creating community-led eco-tourism opportunities for sustainable livelihoods.
Arun Misra, CEO – Hindustan Zinc, said, “Animal welfare and biodiversity conservation are at the heart of our sustainability agenda. Our initiatives protect endangered species and improve livestock health, reinforcing that ecological conservation and community prosperity go hand in hand.”
Other conservation efforts include a Peacock Conservation Park at Kayad Mine, endangered species nurseries at Kayad and Rampura Agucha mines, and the installation of bird nesting and feeding stations, butterfly gardens, and water ponds across operational sites. These interventions foster microhabitats, enhance pollination, and improve water retention, turning industrial landscapes into thriving biodiversity hubs.
Hindustan Zinc’s animal welfare programmes, in partnership with The Animal Care Organization (TACO), also feature Animal Welfare Centres, health camps, Lumpy Skin Disease prevention drives, and reflective collar distributions, improving livestock health, reducing disease risks, and empowering farmers.
Aligned with the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) and UN SDGs, Hindustan Zinc integrates scientific conservation, community engagement, and sustainable development into its operations. By protecting wildlife, restoring habitats, and supporting local communities, the company is setting new benchmarks for responsible mining and biodiversity stewardship in India.
