4 Low-VOC Industrial Paints That Deliver High Performance in Tough Environments

Volatile organic compounds, or VOCs, are chemicals present within paint that get released into the atmosphere during use. They contaminate the air and water and can affect health. This has caused many regulators to limit the permissible levels of VOCs present in paints and other widely used products.

Manufacturers have responded by creating new or modified formulations to meet the required parameters. Low-VOC industrial paints offer high-performance results with reduced environmental impact.

1. High-tech, sustainable paints From Arkema
Arkema is a French company focusing on specialty materials. It has increased investments in sustainable paints, including low-VOC options. Decision-makers explained that consumers want durable and user-friendly paints that minimize unwanted environmental impacts. The company's product developers responded by engineering options that perform well and enhance sustainability.

Among the offerings Arkema debuted at a February 2024 Indian trade show were two paints with curing technologies that reduce the energy needed to dry them. These low-VOC mixtures cater to individuals who want to reduce their industrial carbon footprint without sacrificing high-quality outcomes.

Additionally, the brand launched bio-based, waterborne resins containing up to 97% renewable-based content. Because these items blend the high-performance characteristics of alkyd-based coating and the advantages of water-based formulas, people can lower the emissions of hazardous substances while getting high-performance results.

2. Benjamin Moore's Eco Spec paint
Freshly painted surfaces look beautiful, but the associated fumes can become uncomfortable for people with allergies and asthma. When planning to spruce up their properties, many seek sustainable options. That is understandable, especially since statistics indicate that 61% of corporate leaders view sustainability as a differentiator. Prioritizing formulas that do not cause allergic reactions or make it difficult to breathe is also important, as it maintains the well-being of both employees and customers.

Benjamin Moore's Eco Spec paint is one such possibility. This low-VOC option became certified in September 2025 as an allergy- and asthma-friendly option. This designation applies to a product line that includes a primer and four choices of finishes. The paint provider subjected these formulas to rigorous independent testing, resulting in the brand successfully receiving a certification mark.

Part of the investigation involved verifying that these products meet or exceed physical performance benchmarks for drying time, cleanability, adhesion and scrubbability. These formulas also emit extremely low VOCs one day and two weeks after use. Measuring the outcome at both points shows that the low-emission characteristic remains consistent over time.

3. Crown Trade’s Clean Extreme range
Crown Trade offers a range of paints within its Clean Extreme range, which retain a beautiful finish despite frequent cleaning and constantly challenging conditions. Many of the individual offerings tackle other requirements, such as offering mold inhibition or antibacterial formulas. One of the newest versions — marketed under the Clean Air name — is a carefully created product with ultralow VOCs.

This highly durable paint has a Class 1 scrub rating, resulting in a like-new look that lasts longer. This characteristic extends maintenance cycles by reducing the frequency of redecorating plans. The product also absorbs chemicals, enhancing the indoor air quality. This is possible because the formula has advanced air-purifying technologies that remove up to 45% of formaldehyde after the first coat is applied.

This formulation is 99% solvent-free, and a good choice for people who have allergies or asthma. Brand executives specified that product developers wanted to contribute to the larger aim of reducing greenhouse gases associated with the built environment. There is no single way to achieve that goal, so numerous small actions pay off, especially when they offer measurable results.

The company markets this product to industrial professionals, such as architects and contractors. It is a worthwhile possibility for decision-makers who want to reduce adverse effects on people exposed to the paint. Many industries already utilize connected sensors to measure dangerous fumes, alerting managers to take corrective actions when necessary. Low-VOC paints similarly contribute to better air quality with beneficial formulations that solve known problems.

4. BEHR Premium Plus Ecomix plant-based paint & primer
Many people who choose industrial paints hope to strike a balance between sustainability and durability. That is especially true if they face pressure from stakeholders to make eco-friendly choices when planning new buildings or remodeling existing ones. Selecting a product that can withstand harsh conditions is already a wise choice because it usually means the surface will need repainting less often, resulting in smaller quantities of products used.

BEHR Premium Plus Ecomix Plant-Based Paint & Primer caters to these competing needs as a zero-VOC option that is the first 100% acrylic paint and primer to have at least 20% plant-based, renewable materials. It offers additional environmental benefits due to the efficient manufacturing methods, responsible sourcing and low-impact, recyclable packaging.

Executives noted that this product represents a significant step in the brand's commitment to developing paints that are better for the planet and its inhabitants. Purchasers can make a responsible choice by selecting this option and knowing it will still deliver the durability and high performance they expect and need for industrial applications.

Transitioning to low-VOC industrial paints
These options demonstrate that individuals seeking industrial paints can find viable alternatives that are better for the planet and healthier for those exposed to them, while still delivering exceptional performance in challenging environments. The increasing availability illustrates how leaders can make meaningful improvements without compromising durability.
