Friction welding is a solid phase welding process wherein two materials similar or dissimilar can be joined. This is done by using the heat generated by relative rotation of one with reference to the other under an axial force and then stopping the relative motion spontaneously and applying an axial forge welding force to form a metallic bond. Materials widely dissimilar like Cu and Al, steel to Cu. steel to Al, etc. can be effectively joined by this method. It enables production of cost effective Value Engineered components for automotive, aerospace, chemical, cutting tool, defence and other industries. ETA Technology manufactures continuous drive friction welding machines of capacities varying from 500 kgf to 50,000 kgf upsetting force. The spindle is driven by servo motor/spindle motor and the slide is moved by a hydraulic cylinder or by means of a servo motor through a ball screw. The entire welding process is controlled by an industrial computer. Machines are normally supplied tooled up for specific jobs. ETA machines are used for production of drills, taps, reamers and end mills by major tool manufacturers like Addison, Forbes and Indian Tools. These machines are also used for manufacture of IC engine valves, hydraulic hose end fillings, cable lugs, axles, CV joints, tie rod ends, etc.
