Shielded cables subjected to torsional movements are still plagued by many failures. Energy and data chain expert, igus, has now developed a shielded 3D cable, the individual wires of which can withstand high levels of torsion. The new "Chainflex CF Robot" for energy chain applications is the first in a whole series of special cables. Areas of application include both numerous robotic applications and non-robotic applications, such as rotary tables or spindle drives that have to be supplied with high power levels. In contrast to conventional braided copper shields, which are counter-wound, a torsion-resistant tin-plated copper shield sheath is used with "CF Robot". The forces effected on the cable by torsional movement are largely absorbed by sliding and buffer elements between the sheath, shield and insulation. This prevents early failure of the shield. Finally, the outer sheath material is a high-grade TPE mixture with especially good wear properties. The new robotic special cable has already been tested in the igus technical centre with more than three million torsion movements to +/-270.
