Nano Power Lighting, an ISO 9001: 2000 certified organisation, was established in 2006 for the creation of advanced lighting technology for the industrial, commercial, solar and rural lighting, beginning with the development and creation of a complete LED lighting products and controller portfolio for both indoor and outdoor applications. The company, having acquired a solid knowledge base in LED, thermal, optics and LED drivers, has firmly established itself as a key supplier with its products featured in installations all over the globe. Mr Gurinder Singh Lali, Proprietor, responded to a brief questionnaire from IPF. Excerpts

When did you decide to develop LED fixtures?

We started about two years back, when we saw no quality LED fixtures available in the Indian market, which was witnessing an influx of Chinese fixtures with no assurances of quality, and no proper design. The range that we offer boasts very good designs, good heat dissipation properties and long life. We are using aluminium for these fixtures with the LED mounted on copper.

What was your first experience with LEDs? What about the range?

Our experience in this short period is extremely good. We have established supplier/partner relationships with global companies in this field like Nichia Corporation, Japan; Philips, USA; KHATOD Optoelectronic S.r.l, Italy; and ON Semiconductor, USA. Together these products offer complete solutions in LED lighting for most applications.

How is Nichia LED leading the lighting revolution?

Nichia has grown in the field of manufacturing and sales of fine chemicals, particularly inorganic luminescent materials (phosphors). The company's quest for brighter luminescent and light-emitting materials, lead it to successful development and commercialisation of super high brightness blue LEDs in 1993. Today Nichia is known for its work in the field of advanced semiconductors.

What are the advantages of LED lighting vis-?-vis fluorescent lamps? Is there an element of cost saving?

There is no short term cost saving with LEDs as this form of lighting is 65% costlier at the moment when compared to fluorescent lighting.

But there is certainly a long term benefit thanks to the reduced power consumption and long life of LED fixtures. Considering the versatility of LED products and fixtures, and the growing applications in current scenario, LED lighting provides the best solutions. The bright and creative ideas of lighting architects would often dim and fail in the past because of technical difficulties or commercial constraints. LEDs now make it possible to create a whole new world of lighting. They also provide much more effective lighting than conventional sources while consuming much less energy. And all this, with a service life of 100,000 hours!

When will these costs begin to come down due to volume and technology advancements?

With support from the government in the national interest, given the scarcity of electricity and energy resources, a national programme for promoting LED lighting could bring the cost down as volumes go up.
