Situation

A five-star hotel in Gurgaon, India has a 2100 Tonnage (2x700 and 2x350 TR chiller) air-conditioning system. Previously, its cooling system was treated with a manual chemical dosing and monitoring system by a local competitor. The system suffered serious scaling and corrosion issues so that it has to run at very low cycles. The client experienced very high costs to descale the system. In addition, the cooling towers also had high algae and microbiological growth.

Solution

After a Mechanical-Operational-Chemical (MOC) survey of the cooling water system, Nalco provided a solution in two parts:

• Introducing state-of-the-art chemical treatment program (PSO, THPS, etc)
• Implementing 3D TRASAR Technology for Cooling Water.

Since Nalco applied 3D TRASAR Cooling Water Technology with 24x7 monitoring of the cooling system, all chemicals such as dispersant, corrosion inhibitor, sulfuric acid and bleach are dosed based on actual system requirement in real-time according to the following standards:

• Bleach dosing as per ORP level
• Dose sulfuric acid as per pH requirement
• Dose dispersant as per system scaling stress
• Dose corrosion inhibitor as per corrosion potential of the system

All the performance data is now closely maintained with high system reliability. With the addition of Nalco 360TM Service and the team's 24x7x365 monitoring, the facility can generate and store data for future reference every 15 minutes.

Results

Nalco's water treatment solution brings the following environmental and economic benefits:

• Water Savings

3D TRASAR Cooling Water Technology helps the cooling system operate more efficiently at 6 COC instead of the original 3 COC. Water consumption is reduced by 9,000 m3/year due to the decreased blowdown, saving US$ 14,400/year.

• Energy Savings

After the application of 3D TRASAR Cooling Water Technology, chiller recovery efficiency is much improved from its original state that was impacted by scaling and microbiological growth. Power consumption is reduced by 530,000 KWH/year, saving approximate US$ 53,000 every year.
