Mori Seiki and Gildemeister (DMG) have unveiled the new operating system, CELOS, at EMO Hannover 2013 held from September 16-21 in Germany

Mori Seiki and DMG have continued and enhanced their strategic collaboration since 2009. On October 1, 2013, both companies changed their company names to DMG Mori Seiki Co Ltd (DMG Mori Seiki AG) to further strengthen their collaborative effort in product development. The newly developed CELOS offers a futuristic design and intuitive operation, which overturn the conventional image of a machine tool operating system. The CELOS can be installed on all new machine models from both Mori Seiki and DMG, and the CELOS-equipped models will start to be shipped in April 2014.

The following paragraphs highlight some of the main features of the new operating system from the perspectives of: 1. A wide variety of pre-installed applications; 2. 21.5" and 15.6" dual touchscreen, and, 3. Pursuit of usability.

1) A wide Variety of Pre-installed Applications

Coming with a wide variety of pre-installed applications, the CELOS simplifies and accelerates the process from idea to the finished product. The CELOS applications enable integrated management, documentation and visualization of job, process and machine data, contributing to fewer operator mistakes and greater efficiency. In addition to providing intuitive operation, the CELOS ensures the compatibility with the existing infrastructure and programs, allowing for flexible application expansion according to customers' production needs.

2) 21.5 " and 15.6" Dual Touchscreen

The CELOS is equipped with dual wide displays with screen sizes of 21.5 inches and 15.6 inches. As the system can be operated by operators touching icons on the screen, the screen can be optimally switched according to their operation purposes. This significantly improves operability of the operation panel compared to the existing panel. The ERGO line? uses the same integrated interface as DMG.

3) Pursuit of Useability

The CELOS was designed in pursuit of the usability of operators: The display position is adjustable; the button display can be switched according to machine mode; and when the touch button is used, it is set to sound to ensure an interactive operation between operators and a machine. The switches for rapid traverse, federate override and manual pulse handle were developed in-house from mould in an effort to achieve a high level of operability and design. On the machine operation screen, registered machine models are displayed so that operators can check the movement of each axis that is synchronised with a machine movement. As the panel also indicates which axis is moving in which direction, it is possible for operators to safely operate a machine without actually looking at the inside of a machine.

While the existing display panel corresponds to 19 languages and the operation panel 4 languages, both of the CELOS display and operation panels are available in 20 languages in response to fast-paced globalisation of the manufacturing industry. The CELOS can be used in any factories in the world.

The panel is equipped with the 3D interference checking function as standard to reduce operators' burden by interference prevention during machining of complex-shaped workpieces. Mori Seiki continues to respond to the needs of a wider variety of customers by enhancing the product line-ups and releasing them in the market.
