Indian automakers seek exemption from Chinese PCB anti-dumping duty order

Indian PCB makers say the auto industry hasn't given them firm commitments of volume, thus preventing them from investing in building capacity.
Indian car companies are pushing back against a new government rule that makes it more expensive to import printed circuit boards (PCBs) from China and Hong Kong. These circuit boards are essential parts of modern vehicles, controlling many electronic functions.
The automakers argue that the new 30% anti-dumping duty will raise their costs and ultimately lead to higher car prices. They say they can't source enough high-quality PCBs domestically right now. Indian manufacturers reportedly lack the advanced technology to make complex circuit boards, and they struggle to consistently produce reliable PCBs needed for safety-critical systems in cars.
The Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) says this could compromise safety. They worry that faulty PCBs could lead to accidents.
Indian PCB makers counter that they have the skills and technology to meet the auto industry's needs. They say they haven't been able to invest in expanding capacity because car companies haven't given them firm commitments on how many circuit boards they'll need.
The Indian Printed Circuit Association (IPCA) argues that cheap Chinese imports, backed by government subsidies, have stifled domestic PCB manufacturing. They believe the anti-dumping duty is necessary to create a level playing field and encourage more PCB production in India.
This is a complex situation with no easy answers. Both sides have valid points. The government is trying to balance promoting domestic manufacturing with keeping car prices affordable. It may take time to find a solution that works for everyone.
