The Times of India had recently published a news article with the disturbing headline, “Indian Thermal Plants Worst Polluters.” This news was based on a study conducted by the Centre for Science and Environment, New Delhi. The report went on to state that air pollution in India cuts wheat yield by half. The objective of the study was to give a clear picture of the environmental performance of the power sector.

Apart from the power sector there are other industries, which too affect the quality of our environment. Iron and steel plants have a number of air polluting equipment and departments like the blast furnaces, sinter plants, coke plants and so on. Other industries like the cement industry, chemical plants, metal industries (zinc, copper and aluminum) and many more have processes, which lead to generation of millions and millions of tons of suspended particulate matter (SPM) emissions.

It will be very interesting to note that statistically speaking, in a year, an electrostatic precipitator (ESP) alone collects approximately 500,000 tonnes of ash in a 200 MW thermal power plant. That is the importance of the air pollution control equipment and expertise.

The norms laid down by the government are always under review and being made stricter and stringent to curb and control the pollution being emitted into the atmosphere thereby giving our plant a better chance of survival for future generations.
