Eknath Shinde inaugurates Maharashtra's first semiconductor manufacturing unit

Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde inaugurated the state's first semiconductor manufacturing OSAT (Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Test) plant in Navi Mumbai, marking a significant step in reducing India's reliance on imported semiconductor chips. The plant has been established by RRP Electronics Ltd, a company backed by former cricketer Sachin Tendulkar, with an initial investment of Rs 120.35 billion.

The inauguration event was attended by Shinde, his deputies Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar, Industries Minister Uday Samant, Sachin Tendulkar, RRP Electronics Chairman Rajendra Chodankar, and renowned energy sector figure Anil Kakodkar. Chief Minister Shinde noted that the plant would employ around 400 people and announced that RRP Electronics plans to invest an additional Rs 245.38 billion in the coming days. He highlighted the importance of semiconductor chips in meeting the growing demand for smaller, efficient, and faster electronic devices, and assured the state's support for such industries.

On a lighter note, Shinde quipped, "Sachin Tendulkar is the God of cricket. When he transitioned from the pitch to the chip, we didn't realise. On the pitch, there is an umpire, but a chip needs a conductor."

Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis emphasised the need for domestic semiconductor manufacturing, especially after supply chain disruptions during the pandemic made India dependent on countries like China. He noted that Maharashtra is the first state in India to have a dedicated semiconductor policy and to create an ecosystem for it, with RRP Electronics leading this initiative. Fadnavis expressed confidence that, in the future, the world will use chips made in India.

RRP Electronics has a total investment plan of Rs 365.73 billion for its semiconductor manufacturing venture in Maharashtra. The company holds valuable patents and has technology tie-ups with Israel and Spain, as well as a technology agreement with ST Microelectronics, co-owned by Italy and France. The project represents the first semiconductor manufacturing initiative in the state. The newly inaugurated OSAT plant is part of the project's first phase, with the second phase set to establish a FAB manufacturing (chip manufacturing) unit.
