India's semiconductor sector to generate 1 million jobs by 2026: Report

As India accelerates its development as a semiconductor manufacturing hub, the industry is expected to create 1 million jobs by 2026, according to a report from talent solutions company NLB Services. The demand will span various categories, including approximately 300,000 positions in semiconductor fabrication, 200,000 in ATMP (Assembly, Testing, Marking, and Packaging), and additional roles in chip design, software development, system circuits, and supply chain management.

The report highlights the need for a skilled workforce, from engineers and technicians to specialists in quality control, procurement, and materials engineering, aligning with India's strategy to build a strong semiconductor talent pipeline. This development is also supported by private sector investments in new assembly and testing facilities within India, sparking significant job growth across high-tech and construction sectors.

Key roles expected to emerge include process integration engineer, wafer inspector, design engineer, quality control specialist, and preventative maintenance technician. However, the report warns of a talent gap as the industry scales up, making workforce development and skill training essential.

Sachin Alug, CEO, NLB Services, emphasised India's commitment to cultivating talent through high-quality education, with a target of upskilling 500,000 individuals annually to meet the 2026 goal. Hands-on training through internships, he noted, will play a crucial role in building the nation's semiconductor talent pool. Investment in skilling and reskilling is expected to rise by 25% over the next 2-3 years, boosting India's semiconductor ecosystem.
