Celebrating 25 Years of Burnishing Excellence

Bright Burnishing Tools Private Limited, an ISO 9001: 2008 certified company, celebrates 25 years of excellence in its chosen field

Mr C Devaraj, Managing Director of the Company started the business in 1987, with an intent to carve a niche in the new arena of Burnishing Tools and with sustained efforts, achieved it over the period through the intensive concept selling and aggressive sales promotional measures. Bright Burnishing Tools Private Limited was incorporated in the year 1994 and with over 25 years experience in this business, the company today has cornered a major market share in India.

The company embarked on its entrepreneurial journey with a noble quality policy: "To provide solutions to customer needs by manufacturing quality products through team work coupled with good after sales service, reasonable price, timely delivery and commitment to continual improvement and compliance to requirements and to make the company's position as a market leader."

A quarter of a century later, the team at Bright Burnishing Tools have proved themselves and are proudly celebrating their Silver Jubilee. Prior to founding Bright Burnishing Tools Mr Devaraj worked as a technocrat engineer with specialisation in Tools & Dies, working in the higher echelons of management in a premier corporate entity in Coimbatore. He also had a stint of a few years in Switzerland, on deputation for advanced training and had proven his mettle in implementing the same successfully in the Indian operations. Besides being a specialist in Tools & Dies, Mr Devaraj also designed and manufactured a wide range of multi-specialty tools, jigs, fixtures, cutting tools and specialised burnishing tools and machines.

There were milestones achieved during this journey, the most important being obtaining the ISO 9001: 2000 certification in the year 2001, for design, manufacture, marketing and service of all types of burnishing tools. In the process, it became the first company in India to achieve this feat in the Burnishing Tools segment. With consistency in quality and good after sales service back up in the Indian market, the company has a very wide clientele in India covering MNCs, Corporates, Medium and Small Industries and Public Sector Undertakings.

Burnishing is a cold rolling process on ferrous and non-ferrous machined components. Achieving superior surface finish (0.1 Ra to 0.3 Ra based on pre-burnishing condition) and close tolerance is easier with less cycle time and at negligible cost thereby eliminating finishing and quality problems, which are encountered in the day-to-day production process.

The company manufactures roller burnishing tools for profiles like outer diameter of shafts, internal diameters, taper/angle/conical geometry, flat circular faces, grooves, etc., covering a wide range. Besides conventional drilling machines and lathes, the products are also used in CNC turning centres and machining centres as well. The company also undertakes design and manufacturing of jigs, fixtures, press tools, precision turned components and small fabricated components and machines. The company has proved its products in many places by eliminating reaming, honing etc. For example, one of the customers using the reamer process produced about 200 pieces a month at the rate of Rs 7,400/- per piece. For every 400-600 components, they had to regrind and set the reamer. Bright Burnishing Tools Private Limited offered a solution that instead of reamer suggested to fine bore and burnish with an allowance of few microns only.

This 'process change' saved a huge amount of money and time to the customer. The earlier process with reamer cost about approximately Rs 7/- per hole for finishing. With the burnishing tool it now costs only 10-15 paise per piece, also eliminating completely the reaming process from 2006 onwards, and with just purchasing about 100 tools only since them to date.

Another customer polished the OD of turbine shafts manually, spending several days on the journal sizes. On suggesting and implementing burnishing operation, the customer now finishes the job within a few hours with one burnishing tool. One of the windmill component manufacturers machining pipes with big machine found it difficult to make the bearing size (ID journal bearing size) by machining. Bright Burnishing Tools suggested a tool with a single pass to finish the required bearing size with better finish and tolerance with in short time.

Many such examples are available, where burnishing process is implemented executed the process successfully and earned more benefits to the customer. The custom-built products include:

  • Roller burnishing tools for: internal diameters, external diameters, taper/angle/conical profile (external and internal angles)
  • Flat circular face burnishing tools
  • Single roller tools for outer diameter
  • Multi surface single roller tools, and
  • Special multi roller and single roller burnishing tools.

Bright burnishing tools are being used in sectors like automobile component manufacturing, motors and pump industry, textile machinery manufacturing, hydraulic and pneumatic parts, home and office appliances, machine tool manufacturing, earth moving equipment manufacturing, railway parts, defense, aircraft parts and many more applications. The company has specialised machines in-house for multifarious operations and are well manned by the qualified engineers, supervisors and quality controllers. It also has an independent department, which handles quality, inspection and testing of the tools and machines. The tools, being of tailor-made, are manufactured with utmost diligence and are ensured of trouble-free while in operation. Besides the full-fledged manufacturing set-up, the company also focuses with a keen intent to acquaint itself with the changing functional and market requirements and has always focused on new product development based on customer requirements.

The legacy is being taken forward by the next generation - a young and dynamic engineering technocrat, Mr N Srinivasan with his specialised knowledge and practical intelligence, endeavours to make the business an effective and flourishing one. He takes care of techno-marketing of the products all over India and in the overseas markets.

The organisational structure is basically trifurcated which constitutes Production, General Management and Marketing. The corporate office is independent of the manufacturing unit and is being deftly handled by qualified managers with skills in management, human resources who are ably assisted by supporting staff. They are also fully equipped in terms of both logistics and communication infrastructure, which ensures smooth flow of operation and information between various departments and the manufacturing unit.

The company has been widely represented throughout India by Regional Representatives, who handle both domestic sales and After Sales Service. To strengthen the domestic marketing base, the company has participated in numerous engineering trade fairs in India. With long experience and satisfied customer base in India the company is exporting its quality products to countries like, USA, Iran, Australia, Thailand, Indonesia, UK, Singapore, etc. The motto is: "We Always Focus on Continuous Improvement and Customer Satisfaction".
