A2Z Infrastructure gets Kanpur Municipality's Solid Waste Contract

Kanpur Nagar Nigam has awarded a contract for door-to-door collection and transportation of municipal solid waste for the entire city of Kanpur to A2Z Infrastructure Ltd for a period of 30 years. A2Z Infrastructure Limited is a subsidiary of Gurgaon based A2Z Maintenance and Engineering Services Limited.

This contract is an extension (backward integration) to the processing and disposal of solid waste, which A2Z Infrastructure is currently handling for the city since May 2010. The company will now manage the entire solid waste of the city from door to door collection and transportation, processing and disposal, and generating electricity from waste in an environmental friendly manner.

This is South East Asia's largest integrated municipal solid waste management facility. As per the contract, A2Z Infrastructure will manage the entire city's approx 1,500 MT per day of solid waste, which will be collected from 8.5 lakh households across the city's 110 wards. All wards are expected to be covered by end of December 2010. The company is also constructing a municipal solid waste to power project in Kanpur. Majority of the fuel used in the plant will be RDF (Refuse Derived Fuel), which is derived from solid waste. The power plant is scheduled to be operational by March 2011 and will have the capacity to produce 15 MW of power.

The company uses modern vehicles and equipments like compactors, loaders, road sweeping machines, etc., and has placed garbage bins of various sizes across the city. All vehicles transporting the garbage are tracked with the help of GPS (Global Positioning System), a satellite based navigation system.

Through this, the location of the vehicle and speed is tracked and recorded. This ensures that all the operations of collection and transportation of garbage are efficiently carried. The speed of the truck is also monitored to ensure safety for the citizens of Kanpur.

A2Z Infrastructure Ltd has a portfolio of approximately 5,000 tonnes per day of municipal solid waste management in 14 cities in the country including Patna, Meerut, Varanasi, Muzzafarnagar, Moradabad and Kanpur.
