NLC India Ltd (NLCIL) formerly Neyveli Lignite Corporation is a profit making, Government of India Enterprise involved in mining of lignite and generation of power through lignite based thermal power plants. NLCIL comes under administrative control of Ministry of Coal and serves as an important source of power generation to the states of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Telangana, Rajasthan and Union Territory of Pondicherry.

History

NLCIL was incorporated by Government of India in 1956, following the discovery of lignite deposits in Neyveli, Tamil Nadu. The company functions three open cast mines in Neyveli, in the state of Tamil Nadu at the southeastern tip of India, generating some 24 million tons of high-grade lignite per year. Mine I, the company's original mine, is operated over an area of nearly 17 square kilometers and offers a reserve of nearly 300 million tons. Mine II, first tapped in early 1984 and expanded in the early 1990s, features a reserve of nearly 400 million tons. The total reserves in the Neyveli field are estimated at more than two billion tons.

In the year 2000, the company had transmitted its Power Transmission System to Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd. Power Finance Corporation (PFC) has devoted to lengthening a loan of Rs 10 billion to the Neyveli Lignite Corporation (NLC) for its Mine-II and TPS-II expansion project in the year 2001. NLC trapped an ISO quality certification in the year 2004 and made a tie up with the Oil & Natural Gas Corporation Ltd (ONGC). The Company had entered into a MoU with Rural Electrification Corporation in the year 2005 for funds up to Rs 25 billion and also in the same year made a joint venture agreement with Tamil Nadu Electricity Board.

The company also had entered into a joint venture agreement (JVA) with Mahanadi Coalfields, a subsidiary of Coal India, and Hindalco Industries for developing and mining Talabira II & III coal blocks in the year 2007. In May of the year 2008, the Government of India had accorded approval for development of 1,000 MW (2 X 500 MW) coal based thermal power project at Tuticorin, Tamil Nadu. NLC Power Stations creates new history in generating power of 18 Billion Units in the Year 2011.

In the year 2015, Neyveli Lignite Corporation Ltd has informed BSE that Unit I of NLC Tamilnadu Power Ltd, the Subsidiary Company has been test synchronised with the Grid -NLC signs MoU with Kobe Steel -Neyveli Lignite Corporation Ltd. Unit II (250 MW) of Thermal Power Station -II Expansion Project (2x250 MW) at Neyveli -Neyveli Lignite Corporation Ltd inaugurating the 10 MW Solar Power Project at Neyveli. In the year 2016, the name of Neyveli Lignite Corporation Ltd has been changed to NLC India Ltd.

Joint Venture Projects

NLC India has entered into a joint venture with Gujarat Power Corporation Ltd to set up a mine cum power project in the state of Gujarat, at an estimated cost of Rs 64 billion. The company has proposed to set up a coal based mega power plant in the state of Orissa at an estimated cost of Rs 80 billion. The joint venture company between Mahanadi Coalfields Ltd, Hindalco and NLC for mining coal from Talabira block has been established. MCL, being the lead partner is carrying out all pre-project activities. NLC also proposes to exploit the lignite deposits in Hadla and Palana lignite blocks in Bikaner district of Rajasthan for the 250 MW power plant to be set up as an extension of the on-going Barsingsar Power Project.

Upcoming Projects

NLCIL currently operates four open cast lignite mines of total capacity of 30.6 million Tonnes per annum (MTPA) and five thermal power stations with a total installed capacity of 3240 MW. The company, through its subsidiary NTPL, has also recently commissioned a 1000 MW coal based power plant (comprising 2 Units of 500 MW capacity each), 10 MW solar plants and 30 MW wind power plant thus bringing the total installed capacity of the company to 4280 MW.
